We are innovating into how the membership works. It's increasingly becoming a resource for two quite distinct groups:
1) helping other artists to think about how to create successful grassroots campaigns - and to make them sustainable on their energy and finances.
2) helping other streets, towns and communities to rapidly decarbonise their homes, buildings, schools, without waiting for a perfect government to help out at scale.
With this in mind - Neala Schleuning is going to kick off a series of workshops for the Power members on the theme of the Art of Protest next Tues, 28 June 2022!
But if you can't make it - the workshops will be recorded on zoom and uploaded into a special portal.
Neala will be examining these questions:
1. The political role of art: Whether art should be political and if so in what way? Should art convey a conscious political message to educate, to share, to manipulate, to inspire? In what ways should art be political?
2. The source of inspiration for art: Should art reflect the social experience of the people or the visions of the individual artist?
3. The roles of the artist: Is the artists a visionary of the future, and should we entrust the artist with this role? Does the artist have a social responsibility to reflect the culture as a whole, or should the artist's private vision determine the role of the artist?
4. The content and techniques of political art: Which styles and techniques are the most effective in communicating complex political ideas?
5. Art and politics: What are the most effective political means for confronting the forces of power in the modern world? What elements of the visual image might serve to empower people to challenge oppression in their lives? What is there about the making of art that might inform the making of politics? Is politics in the service of art, or is art in the service of politics?
