SUN DANCE

Making manifest a midsummer solar celebration we began growing 1000s of sunflowers throughout the community in March 2023 - along the street (Lynmouth Road), in The Grange housing estate, at youth project Project Zero, at Frederic Street pre-school and local school Barn Croft Primary and in the surrounding area.

We came together with flowers and feasting at a solar celebration in July just after the first phase of solar panels were installed on the street.

This mass growing was a way of marking and celebrating progress so far on the POWER STATION . It was a collaboration with Organic Lea and their work bringing community growing to the street -sharing a ‘street by street’ approach to renewable, community power and action. Big thanks to Kristin Troemmler working alongside Hilary as the sunflowers kickstart more growing action with ‘Grow the Grange.’

After the event sunflowers were distributed to community gardens across the borough: Transition Walthamstow ‘s garden, Chingford Hall Estate, Stocksfield, Tenby Court, Grow Together E17, XR Welcome Garden, Our Pastures, Walthamstow Tool Library.

We are now harvesting the seeds and knowledge for further growing.

Thanks to:

Lancasters Garden Centre for pot collection, Johnsons of Whixley for lots of pots, Melcourt Sylvagrow for early compost, North London Waste Authority for loads of compost and Cheshire Fields allotments for letting us unload it there.

Big thanks to everyone who donated soil, compost and pots and got stuck in growing sunflowers. Thank you to the Gleaners for supporting the developing PotLuck meals and the street feast and to Jessica Hudsley and Lou for being on it with street closure and event planning. Thank you Stories and Supper for joining with stories and food, Barn Croft School for beginning the sunflower procession and singing sunflower songs and Steve and Project Zero for leading the fun and sunflower sales. This was all pulled off on a very low budget and we appreciate all the support.
