Dark inversion storylines - why do we watch them?

When we enjoy things, we get hooked.. Stories and characters going through conflict and in the middle of grappling with important themes… We want to find out what happens next.

We understand that these characters are on a trajectory of emotional and psychological change and growth, and we want to see if they can get the change they need…

This is where dark inversion storylines come into this email. Have you ever heard of this type of story?

I remember as a kid always hating them... they were the type of movie that starts with the text on screen:

"This film is based on real events"

And then you know something awful is going to happen… basically the dark inversion story is one where someone flawed but overall good falls under the influence of someone else, someone more powerful, but someone with a very negative influence… so we watch people change for the worse.

Instead of growing positively and overcoming obstacles to grow positively, they become worse and worse versions of themselves - sometimes it's when people who are a bit lost become monsters of one kind or another…

They are under someone else's shadow…

But what causes this? It's probably because they care too much about meeting the expectations of people they feel have power over them... and not just being themselves - and inviting their detractors to unsubscribe from their lives…

The last few nights, me and Hil were watching a series called the "Shrink Next Door" - it's with Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell - and a shrink takes over the life of his patient.. it started out really quirky but got so bad so quick, that last night Hilary declared: "I can't watch anymore…"

This is always the way I end up feeling about these storylines…

This was ringing around my ears this morning and through the day, as I was thinking about Rushi Sunak and the government, and the terrible corruption and basically everything that's happened over the last 20 or 40  years in our public institutions…

How many dark inversion stories have been unfolding in the lives of these policy makers, these politicians, the mainstream media that prop them up, how many sad, lonely, unreported dark inversion stories must there be, people with good intentions being hijacked by other agendas.

Will the hopes and lives of the next generations be crushed by these stories that have never even been properly reported?

One thing we promise is that the story from Power Station will never be a dark inversion story. We will keep learning to fight better... and we will do it by being ourselves and letting go of caring too much what our detractors say…

And my one feeling for you is - just be more of yourself - don't listen to those who don't want you to speak your mind - show them to the door of your mind... life is way too short.

Write for the ones who want to hear your thoughts.

Dance with the ones who love your moves.

Build Power Stations with the ones who know that this is the way ahead.
